Phonics is a method for teaching, reading and writing of the English language by developing learners' phonemic awareness—the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate phonemes—in order to teach the correspondence between these sounds and the spelling patterns (graphemes) that represent them.
1. Recognise the sounds that each individual letter makes;
2. Identify the sounds that different combinations of letters make such as ‘sh’ or ‘oo’; and blend these sounds together from left to right to make a word
3. Children can then use this knowledge to ‘de-code’ new words that they hear or see. This is the first important step in learning to read.
